Wilmette Community Nursery School

Founded in 1961, Wilmette Community Nursery School (WCNS) is one of the oldest preschools on the North Shore. With children at its heart, WCNS supports deep thinking, exploration, and a relationship-based learning environment. Over 60 years later, WCNS continues to uphold its mission to provide a warm, nurturing, supportive environment where children can play, learn, and grow under the guidance of professional and devoted teachers.

This spring, we will be hosting our annual spring fundraising gala and are seeking community members to donate to and/or sponsor our event. Your contribution will greatly help Wilmette Community Nursery school continue its legacy in our community. All of the revenue generated from the evening will directly benefit the school by helping to provide engaging curriculum to our students and support critical programming like weekly music, the edible garden, and STEAM enrichments. Most importantly, donations will help us continue to foster a strong sense of belonging in our students through innovative and creative play and the relationships staff build with each individual student.

The raffle includes additional prizes donated by many of Wilmette’s favorite restaurants. Are you feeling lucky?

Please consider purchasing a raffle ticket or simply donating to Housing Our Own Wilmette. Thank you for your support of this important local charity where all funds are used to support Wilmette residents in need.

This is the third year in a row we are working with New Moms. New Moms’ mission is to strengthen families by partnering with young moms as they progress toward housing stability, economic mobility, and family well-being. They believe in the strength, skills, and potential of all families and communities to pursue and achieve their goals, and envision a future where every young family thrives. While 97% of the young families that come to New Moms are experiencing poverty, all of them seek a future of shared prosperity with their children.

Our 2022 donation provided 306 nights (or 10 months) of housing for a young mother and her child AND 3 months of emergency support -- food, diapers, formula, cleaning supplies, and transit.

The Village of Wilmette

The Village of Wilmette was incorporated as a municipality in 1872, thus in 2022, the Village of Wilmette will observe its 150th birthday. In fall of 2020 the Village Board of Trustees determined that this milestone should be celebrated in a manner similar to prior significant anniversaries. To that end, the Village Board created a 15-member Sesquicentennial Planning Committee which first met in December 2020 and continues to meet monthly. The committee is working to create a calendar of events as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration. These events and a variety of other projects are being developed by the Committee’s various working groups: big events, fundraising, arts, history, business, and promotion. 1MM is proud to sponsor this exciting event:

The Sparks of Light Story~
In 1995, as Vicky Weis watched her mother deal with the ravages of cancer, she was called to honor her mother’s 13-month journey. In 2005, after years of planning, Vicky started Faye’s Light, named for her mother; a place where spa therapists and holistic practitioner’s come to offer free services for those battling cancer. Now, this astonishingly powerful idea is spreading nationwide through Sparks of Light.

Be inspired by Vicky’s story in her own words at www.facebook.com/healingsparksoflight.

Medical Aid for Children of Latin America (MACLA) 2019

Dr. Sara R. Dickie volunteers for a DR trip that is run by a group from Kansas City called Medical Aid for Children of Latin America (MACLA). Surgeons volunteer from all over the country. Dr. Dickie has gone for 7 years in a row and has seen many return patients. The plastic surgeon team operates on congenital and traumatic deformities on kids such as cleft lip and palate, hand deformities, ear deformities and burns.

“Every year seems more rewarding than the last. What I have realized as people applaud my personal sacrifice is that this does not seem like sacrifice at all. This is not work. This trip is a joy and a pleasure. I am allowed to immerse myself in pure surgery. Bureaucracy is lifted away. Friendships built around sharing this common good and lots of laughter make the trip more like a family reunion than anything close to a job. I consider myself so lucky to be a part of something so productive, functional and deeply satisfying. This year we were able to see nearly 200 patients in our pre-operative clinic on Sunday and by the end of the week had provided over 120 surgical operations free to the poor and underserved.” Dr. Sara R. Dickie

INFORMATION: Sacred Heart School is a faith-based community of faculty, parents and staff dedicated to educating the hearts and minds of children from preschool through 8th grade.

There are three important components to this mission. As a school, we hold ourselves to the high academic standards that our children require to be successful lifelong learners. As a pillar of our parish, we instill the values of our faith so that our children grow spiritually as well as intellectually. As a community, we work in partnership with parents to surround our students with people who care about them and their future.

Families came together with the united purpose of educating hearts and minds when Sacred Heart School was founded over 100 years ago. We renew that purpose each year, incorporating new tools and resources to ensure that we continue to fulfill our mission amidst the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. Please bid on the relaxing spa gift that One Magnificent Medspa donated to their special event.
Mission
The mission of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation Auxiliary Board is to be the investors in innovation by giving unrestricted grants to establish much-needed research programs at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, which work toward the prevention, early detection, and treatment of the scores of diseases which we collectively call cancer.

Our Story
The University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation Auxiliary Board was founded in 1951 by North Shore resident, Stephanie Howell. She and her friends raised $3,000 in their first year. The Board was incorporated in 1959 as an official auxiliary of the UCCRF. Since its inception, the Auxiliary Board has raised over $3 million for cancer research for the Foundation. In 2006, the Board was named as a recipient of the University’s coveted Harper’s Society Award for its fundraising efforts.

Today’s Board actively works towards raising funds for the selected research doctors. There are also sustaining and honorary members of the Auxiliary Board with longstanding ties to our community and our cause.

Currently the UCCRFAB is serving a commitment to support the research of Drs. Nita Lee, Jane E. Churpek and Russel Szmulewitz. Each doctor receives funds for three years.

Benefit will take place at the Winnetka Community House. Please bid on the relaxing Tranquility facial we donated to the special auction.

WCNS’s annual Benefit provides funding needed to support enhancement of our facilities, financial aid scholarships, and professional development for our teachers. WCNS was founded during the Second World War to care for children whose mothers wished to take some part in the war effort. Over the ensuing 75 years, WCNS has operated a variety of full and half-day nursery school programs. WCNS believes it is important to meet the needs of the whole child by providing a safe, consistent, nurturing environment and encouraging the social, emotional, physical, and
intellectual growth of children. The unique personality, needs, abilities, and learning style of each child are accepted and appreciated, as the staff and parents work together in the best interests of the children.

We emphasize socialization, building each child’s self-esteem through play, the natural learning
experience for children.

We are donating a magnificent pampering gift pack to benefit the Sauganash Elementary School children. Please considering making a donation or bid for a relaxing facial treatment and skincare products.

Friends of Sauganash Elementary hosts an annual gathering of parents, teachers, support staff, and community members to celebrate and support the amazing students at Sauganash Elementary School. Our neighborhood Chicago Public School is a diverse community of over 600 students that we proudly support both academically and socially. Due to budget cutbacks from CPS, we face significant financial challenges. Most significantly, we are able to offset these budget shortfalls by supplying teacher aide positions to boost teacher impact in over crowded classrooms. And, we are only able to support the school financially because of the fundraising efforts of our parent-teacher organization.

The Spring Benefit will be held at the Holiday Inn - North Shore on Touhy Avenue on June 2nd with over 200 guests. The event includes dinner, dancing, raffles, as well as silent and live auctions. Donations and bidding on silent auction items are available at www.FOS2018.gesture.com
